How Information & Referral (I&R) Works How I&R Works United Way of Geater Williamsburg's Information and Referral Center links people in need to available services. You may have already talked to a couple of human service agencies that were uable to help, don't give up hope. The I&R center collects and maintains information on hundreds of human service organizations - - public and private agencies, civic clubs, support or self-help groups, non-profit and for-profit agencies. Each one of these organizatiosn offers different services. One of them may be able to help you. A trained I&R staff person helps determine which referral will best meet your needs by gathering as much information as needed to steer you in the right direction. Any information you share with an I&R staff person will only be used to help you and handle your situation. All names and information are held in strict confidence. What you can do When you go to an agency for assistance, you can help them help you by bringing all of the information you have about your situation. A little preparation before you call the I&R office and got to the service which they refer you to will save you alot of time and effort later.
