This is the list of agencies and their projects. The project descriptions are subject to change. nt VOLUNTEER DEADLINE TO SIGN UP FOR A PROJECT If you would like one of the following projects - please put the number and the project location/description on the card so that we match you up correctly. If you have no preference, please mark that on the card also. Packing of USDA commodities and cleaning and organizing of outreach cente,r clothes closet, property, etc. #36 York River State Park - Weeding, gardening around visitors center - removing and rebuilding steps to beach behind shelter #37 Waller Mill Park - trail clean up and maintenance #38 Waller Mill School; James River Elementary School; Matthew Whaley Elementary School - Memorial Bench clean up - sand and finish bench, planting and mulching around the bench #39 Eastern State Hospital - stain outdoor furniture - wear work clothes, gloves provided #40 Heritage Humane Society - paint outside of building - bring ladders/paint ** #41 Peoples Place (Colonial Service Board) - need a volunteer group to help organize a lunch or dinner in the early winter to celebrate members of People's Place who have done well. Email or call for more details #42 Grove Community Outreach Center - "Back to School Blessing" A community event to bless the children with the much needed school supplies. Fun food and lots of love, games, cotton candy, popcorn, etc. Volunteers can dress in fun, unique costumes or just come with a big smile. #43 Williamsburg Redevelopment & Housing Authority - help weed and clear garden and flower beds around outside of building. Help clean inside building and some painting of hallways. Bring gloves, rakes and gardening tools. #44 Jamestown Island - general grounds clean up - bring gloves #45 Faith in Action - Washington Residence - window repair #46 American Red Cross - Health and Safety Fair - assist students at each station, set up and clean up #47 Head Start (WMBG/JCC Community Action Agency) - assist teachers in classroom with storytelling, reading, helping to serve children's meals, etc. ** #48 Crossroads Group Home for Youth - Prime and paint entire inside of residents house and admit bldg. #49 Hospice House - Clearing area for playground - involves cutting down trees ** #50 Magruder Elementary School - Weed flower beds infront of school and parking lot ** #51 Magruder Elementary School - Paint a map of VA on the cafeteria wall. (need donation of some latex paints - black/light blue/brown/tan/yellow) ** #52 Magruder Elementary School - Lunch Buddies ** #53 Magruder Elementary School - Gym Class Assistants #54 Magruder Elementary School - Library Assistants/Volunteer Readers #55 Magruder Elementary School - Textbook Room Maintenance #56 Bruton High School - Paint the dugouts on the baseball and softball fields. Paint the press box. Paint the field house. (need donation of exteria paint #57 Bruton High School - Reestablish the flower and plant beds around the school (need donation of flowers or plants and mulch for the beds #58 Salvation Army - Replace floor board in office, clean carpet, clean around door edges, paint 2 walls in one office #59 Salvation Army - Paint inside offices, make phone calls, general office help ** #60 Waller Mill Elementary - Classroom Assistants/Lunch Buddies - assist teachers with projects in classroom and then go to lunch with the students ** #61 Waller Mill Elementary - Birdhouse Project - assist students with putting together birdhouse kits (need donation of kits - call for more details) #62 Queenslake Middle School (location is at Bruton High School - trailers off to the side) - Office Assistants - assist secretaries with copying, filing, etc. #63 Queenslake Middle School (location is at Bruton High School - trailers off to the side) - Cafeteria Assistants/Lunch Buddies #64 Queenslake Middle School (location is at Bruton High School - trailers off to the side) - Teacher Assistants - assist teachers in the classroom with projects #65 Queenslake Middle School (location is at Bruton High School - trailers off to the side) - Library Assistants #66 Queenslake Middle School (location is at Bruton High School - trailers off to the side) - Guidance Office Assistants #67 Grove Community Outreach - general building maintenance #68 Housing Partnerships - 4 houses being painted #69 RSVP - serve lunch to the Seniors at the Senior Center and play Bingo with them after lunch. #70 CDR - landscaping at the Lakeside and Woodside buildings in Norge #71 CDR - construction of shade roof over sandbox at Lakeside Bldg. and repair roof of outdoor playhouse (sanding, replace some shingles) #72 CDR - Add flooring and build shelves in the attic at Woodside Bldg. #73 CDR - put together early literacy bags which involves cutting, tracing, laminating and some light sewing - Norge #74 CDR - paint shutters at Woodside bldg - on ground level, but can be removed #75 Faith in Action - Bradley Residence - yard work - cleaning, plant flowers, etc. for a disabled gentleman #76 Williamsburg Community Health Foundation #77 United Way of Greater Williamsburg - Evening Assistance with serving drinks #78 United Way of Greater Williamsburg - Set Up and Clean up after the Evening Program As more projects become available, or change, they will modified or added to the end of the list (deadline for projects was July 15, but some are still pending and some may be changed) There are some projects available for those businesses who are not available to volunteer their time on Day of Caring. If you know of a need in the community that could become a Day of Caring Project, or if your business wants to volunteer for their own project (for example - an employee has been out of work due to surgery and needs some light house maintenance, or a co-workers grandmother is in a nursing home that could use some entertainment for a few hours) PLEASE call or email Zena at 253-2264, myallz@uwgw.org If your company cannot donate the time of employees to work on a project but could make a Donations (paint, plants, mulch, etc.) to support projects will be CLICK HERE for printable sign up form to fax or mail to us. Volunteer Team Leaders and individual volunteers can stop by the United Way Office on Monday, September 8, Tuesday, September 9th or Wednesday, September 10th between 10am and 4pm to pick up their t-shirt(s). Shirts will be signed for and volunteers of the team will be directed to contact that person to collect their shirts. If you are unable to pick them up, they will be available at the morning rally on September 11th. All volunteers are invited to the Day of Caring Kick-Off Rally at 8:00a.m. on September 11th, at the Music Theatre of Williamsburg in Norge (next to the Candle Factory). From there, the volunteers will depart for their projects at the local United Way agencies and other community and government service organizations in James City County, City of Williamsburg and Upper York County. All volunteers are then invited, as special guests, to the Community Service Building, (If you do not receive a sign up form in the mail, please email or call ZENA at 253-2264)
