SNAP Challenge

logo maker logo creatorThe SNAP Challenge* gives participants a view of the struggle to obtain adequate food that is faced by millions of low-income Americans. Most participants take the Challenge for one week, living on $4.30 per day worth of food (the Virginia food stamp benefit). The Challenge participants must make food shopping choices on a limited budget and often realize how difficult it is to avoid hunger, afford nutritious foods and stay healthy with too few resources.

*Supplemental Nutritional Assistance Program - formerly known as the Food Stamp Program

Living on a food stamp budget for just one week, does not come close to the struggles encountered by low-income families week after week and month after month. However, it provides those who participate in the Challenge with a new perspective and greater understanding.

Fund Raiser for United Way of Greater Williamsburg:

As a participant of the SNAP Challenge, you can ask your friends, family & co-workers to Sponsor you for a financial donation to UWGW. They will easily be able to donate from this web-site page by clicking “Donate Today” and in the designation box, type in “SNAP Challenge”. If they prefer to write a check, it should be made payable to “UWGW”, marked “Snap Challenge” and mailed to:

UWGW 5400 Discovery Park Blvd. Suite 104 Williamsburg VA 23188

This has the potential to increase your personal donation significantly. Each of your Sponsors is welcome to also “take the challenge” to get involved.

Challenge Guidelines:

Each person should spend $4.30 for food and beverages per day during the Challenge week for a total of $30.10.

  1. All food purchased and eaten during the Challenge week, including fast food and dining out, must be included in the total spending.
  2. During the Challenge, only eat food that you purchase for the project. Do not eat food that you already own (does not inlude spices and condiments).
  3. Avoid accepting free food from friends, family or at work, including receptions, briefings or other events where food is served.
  4. Keep track of receipts on food spending and take note of your experiences throughout the week.
  5. Invite others to join you, including co-workers, reporters, chefs and elected officials.
